New Focus Introduces Variety of New Photonics Tools Products Expanding Breadth of Offerings

Monday June 2, 4:15 pm ET

New High-Speed 40-GHz Amplifiers, Electro-Optic Modulator Driver, Closed-Loop Picomotor Acutators, and Breadboards and Workstations Increase Company's Reach and Depth

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 2003-- New Focus, Inc. (Nasdaq:NUFO - News), a leading provider of photonics and microwave technology solutions, today announced the introduction of a variety of new products including easy-to-use broadband 40-GHz amplifiers, versatile RF sources for their line of electro-optic phase and amplitude modulators, patented closed-loop Picomotor(TM) actuators and Intelligent closed-loop Picomotor(TM) drivers, and a new line of high-quality optical workstations and breadboards which deliver the rigidity and mechanical damping required for the most demanding photonics applications from the laboratory to the manufacturing floor.

"These new products complement our product line, adding both depth and breadth," said Dr. Nadim Maluf, vice president of the Photonics Tools and Instruments Group at New Focus. "All of them offer the highest in performance, whether it's in vibration isolation, accuracy, power, or bandwidth -- and at extremely competitive pricing. With these products, we can better address the needs of our customers."

The Model 1424 high-performance 40-GHz amplifier is ideal for increasing the sensitivity in high-speed test and measurement such as that needed to test 40-Gbit/s telecommunications components. Unlike many other high-bandwidth amplifiers, this compact unit is sensitive down to DC (zero frequency) so can be used with bit-error rate testers and oscilloscopes in both time and frequency domains.

The Model 3363 electro-optic modulator driver conveniently includes a built-in frequency source and power amplifier, and offers flexibility in operation. It is ideal for use with the resonant phase and amplitude modulators, providing up to 30 dBm of output power for high modulation depths (up to three radians) up to a frequency of 2.0 GHz. Modulators are used in various applications including spectroscopy, and the elimination of spurious reflections in optical systems such as in state-of-the-art photolithography equipment.

The Model 8310 closed-loop Picomotor(TM) actuator and its accompanying Model 8751-C driver are ideal for applications where closed-loop control and absolute position accuracy is required such as automated laser beam alignment and positioning of samples. The new highly accurate and unique device offers the best attributes of the standard Picomotor(TM) actuator -- better than 30-nm resolution, greater than 5 lbs (22 N) of force along with set-and-forget long-term stability -- with the added benefits of exceptional accuracy and plus or minus 1-micron bi-directional repeatability over the entire half-inch travel range.

The new highly competitive line of breadboards and workstations offers stainless-steel tops with the industry-standard pattern of threaded holes for mounting components. The mounting holes are isolated so that spills cannot damage the inner honeycomb core. Lightweight breadboards are also available. The high-performance modular workstations use optimally damped pneumatic isolators (air springs) to provide vibration-free working surfaces for loads up to 300 pounds.

All these products will be demonstrated at the CLEO tradeshow, booth #735, in Baltimore, Maryland, June 3-5, 2003. Products are currently available.

These new amplifiers, drivers, motion-control actuators, tables and workstations are the latest additions to the New Focus photonics tool chest. Photonics products manipulate light -- the flow of photons -- just like electronic products manipulate electricity -- the flow of electrons. Photonics represent a key enabling technology in a variety of industries, including semiconductor IC processing, biotechnology, oil well recovery, industrial sensing and telecommunications.
