Mobile Internet market seen booming

STOCKHOLM, June 19 (Reuters) - The number of people surfing the Internet on mobile phones will exceed the number of personal computer surfers in three years, Kurt Hellstrom, chief executive of Sweden's Ericsson telecoms equipment maker, said.

Hellstrom spoke at an international conference on telecomms services and local access in Stockholm on Monday, which brought together representatives of telecoms companies and wireless network and Internet protocol experts from all over the world.

``According to our calculations the number of mobile Internet users will exceed the number of PC Internet users in the middle of 2003. We are on our way to the post-PC area,'' said Hellstrom in an opening address to the conference on Monday.

The five-day technical symposium will focus on trends created by new mobile and Internet technologies, their potential limitations and opportunities they create, its organisers said in a statement.

Speakers include representatives of German Siemens , Norway's Telenor, Lucent Technologies , Japan's NTT Network Innovation Labs, U.S. 3Com Corp. France Telecom , Marconi and Spain's Alcatel.
