My too cents:

1) It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.
2) Everybody who participates in this contest is a winner.
3) For next year (2014) and beyond, use the last trading day of the year to set beginning portfolio prices.
Make deadline for submission midnight second Friday of the year.
Trust everyone not to game the system.
If someone seems to have gamed the system and wins, he is the winner unless a majority of the contestants
declare him/her not to be. Same goes for the next ones in line.

FWIW, in the time I've been in the contest (~10 years), several folks have seemed to game the system in the beginning and they've not won. It may be more of a liability than an asset to choose a stock with a big gain in the beginning, but at least it doesn't appear to be a winning strategy.
