johnd, I can mention one example: jokes2000.com. One of the largest jokes sites on the internet, making millions of bucks. They have two FreeBSD servers, and I think they are equipped with 256MB RAM each. A third server may be under way, because of the load, but it's not the memory, that gives the problem, but the CPU speed... And this is a FILE SERVER!!
Being associated with a small web-hosting company, I can inform you that their Windows NT boxes don't have that many domains, that requires more than 256MB RAM. If they get more domains, a new server is put up, since too many domains on an NT Server is too unstable. Their Linux box, which has most customers (I think 500 domains), has 256MB RAM.
Even a nuclear powerplant as Barsebäck doesn't have more than 128-256MB RAM in most of their servers.
But, OK, if you want to run MS SQL Server, many people believe that the sluggish performance is due to lack of RAM, and they upgrade the RAM all they can. But even here, I see that most MS SQL Servers don't use more than default RAM usage, and I think this is about 48MB RAM or something like that. They simply forget to tell MS SQL Server that there is more RAM installed.
