Can somebody please explain this to me?

"Jurgen Klinsmann's stint as manager of the national team helped to reestablish them as a world power."

This is a well established fact that I've heard many times. The only problem is that it doesn't even resemble reality. I spent some time researching it.

Germany had a fantastic performance in the 2002 World Cup, leading all teams in goals scored in the group stage and winning three straight in the knockout stage before losing to Brazil in the finals. When Klinsmann managed the team in 2006, they lost in the semi-finals. In other words, THEY DID WORSE!

The closest Germany came to slipping out of the "world power" ranks was when they lost in the quarterfinals in 94 and 98, but these defeats sandwiched a Euro Cup victory in 96.
