Linux is a very good operating system for certain types of servers, and requires no more expertise than is necessary for maintaining a complex WinNT server setup. (Usually done by an MCSE or equivalent.)

My concern is not over whether or not Linux continues to gain acceptance in certain markets. I have no doubt that it will.

The issue is whether anybody can really make much money off it. Remember that the basic intellectual property is free. The barriers to entry for somebody who wants to wrap services and support around is are very low, which means the margins are likely to be very low in the long term too.

This will be more and more the case as the software becomes more widely accepted and general knowledge of how to work with it spreads.
