But none of this has any direct bearing on how markets function. The markets will continue to function according to the same principles that they have for centuries. That's why I maintain that this time.....it is not different. The play, the actors and actresses, the plot, and the script remains the same. Only the theatre is different.

My point goes to the obvious example, the up tick rule was halted when it was thought it would be a benefit to the economy. This had a huge influence on the way the market operates. Also the Fed and Goldman Sachs in bed more than ever before is also has major influence on how level is the playing field.

IMHO the only thing that hasn't changed is human emotions and how the affect the market.
