The NC is a loose specification for a particular hardware configuration, if we're talking about the hardware. There is nothing bold about it and hardly anything new to speak of. The software is truly a radical departure, a bona fide pardigm shift from current software norms. It's a truly distributed system of components which interact with other components on other machines, including centralized servers. Terminals could not execute application software in the past and they can't support software components now. Java changes all of that by combining the simplicity and control of terminals with the power of workstations and PCs. It achieves that in a scaleable manner. That is, software components, objects if you like, are distributed across the network when and where they are needed and they communicate across the network with other objects. What this is is a standard, formal mechanism for creating an truly object-oriented environment on a global scale. Java is at the heart of all this and it stands on the shoulders of the many notable achievements which led up to it. Java's just a kid right now but man it's a big kid and growing fast. 1998 will be remembered as the year of Java and Microsoft is going to want to forget Java ever happened.
