Paul: Gateway made a big booboo by setting up their own stores a few years back - and Apple is following them down that path.

Dell commented a while back (half a year, maybe) that they would be setting up some stores as well&#133 my only explanation for that is an attempt on their part to get a bigger piece of the consumer market. Or maybe they have trashed the idea altogether in light of the recent economic developments.

In Europe, consumers aren't very willing to buy mail-order or over the internet, at least compared to the US. Setting up their own stores might be the best way to go to gain greater share. The problem with traditional electronics stores is that they typically deal with goods that are relatively stable in price (TVs, VCRs etc.). Trying to gain much market share through those channels would definitely wreck Dell's low-inventory model.
