In-Stat Declares NIC Market Positive Second Quarter Growth Due to Fast Ethernet Business Wire - September 02, 1997 08:09 IN-STAT %ARIZONA %COMED %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %TELECOMMUNICATIONS %PUBLISHING V%BW P%BW SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1997--In-Stat reports positive Q2 growth in the Network Interface Card market, after a downturn in Q1. End-use sales for the NIC market increased to $1 billion in Q2 1997, a 2% sequential growth over Q1. The two segments that pulled the NIC market along with positive revenue and unit growth were Fast Ethernet and Token Ring. For the first time Fast Ethernet NICs represent the largest share of revenue, 38%, up from 29% in Q1 1997. "Market reaction to Fast Ethernet price drops in late Q1 spurred Fast Ethernet NIC shipments to 3.6 million units in Q2, a 38% growth over Q1," said Diane Myers, senior analyst for In-Stat's Networking Service. "Fast Ethernet represented 36% of total units in Q2 to Ethernet's 51%. However, in Q3 1996 In-Stat predicts Fast Ethernet will out-ship Ethernet," Myers added. According to In-Stat, the overall market share leader continues to be 3Com with 41% of all NIC shipments in Q2 and 44% in the first half of 1997. "In the hotly contested Fast Ethernet NIC market, 3Com remains atop the leaderboard with a 42% unit and revenue market share," Myers explained. "While 3Com shipped 1.5 million Fast Ethernet NICs, Intel was not far behind with 1.2 million units. In addition to its strong Fast Ethernet NIC business, Intel is ramping up to have a significant push into Fast Ethernet on the motherboard." "Q2 1997 Network Interface Card Market Analysis," No. CQ9703M5, Myers' new report in In-Stat's Networking Quarterlies Service, goes into more depth on market shares, key vendors, and includes a rolling three-quarter forecast of the NIC market. This quarterly NIC report also contains breakdowns by bus, as well as vendor market shares for the PC Card market, and LAN+Modem cards. This report is specially priced at $2,495 which includes analyst inquiry privileges on topics covered in this report.
