I flew on a Russian plane once, about 30 years ago. There were no overhead bins, so everyone had all the stuff on their lap. They also bought a lot of stuff at duty-free so they were really big piles of bags in their laps. Some people didn't have a visa to travel, so they just flew out, shopped at duty free never leaving the controlled part of the airport, and flew home with their purchases. This was before the fall of the wall so the shopping was limited domesticly.
