My understanding of why the chip makers want to spend billions on a move to 300mm is to vastly improve WAFER yield. It is a damn expensive and complicated process to take a silicon wafer from its virgin state through to the die cutter. When that wafer finally gets to the end of the line they would like a lot more chips off of it.

If it currently costs x (including capital equipment, consumables etc.) to process a 200mm wafer, then it may cost 1.5x to process a 300mm wafer that yields 2.25 times as many chips. It certainly seems to make economic sense to switch. I also believe that the move to 300mm will not only take place in new fabs but will also occur in most existing 200mm fabs. Further, I don't think the equipment replacement will be 0.5 to 1 since that would assume static chip demand which is
not the case, chip demand is growing.

Bottom line, I see robust equipment and laser sales. Hopefully, the current fab experts can set me straight if I'm off base in my analysis.

Sorry for the repost, didn't think anyone would read something titled "Ian and Bob" :)

A Cymer bull based on research,
Gary.
