Law Firms Agree to Give Clients Diversity Data on Legal Teams

Chopped Liver

Orin Kerr reports that several major law firms have agreed to monitor who -- or, rather, what race/gender/sexual orientation -- works what hours, and report that information to clients who ask.

I wonder, of course, how they would report my hours. My mother's Chinese; my father's white. Most people have no idea how to classify me. Would they count my hours as half-hours? Would they interrogate my parents to see which one I was more like?

If the past is any guide -- I typically mark both boxes, even if they tell me to only mark one -- they'll gleefully count me as Asian for diversity purposes and leave it at that. (Despite my online persona, they'll probably consider me female, too).

For the purposes of checking boxes, my dad might as well be chopped liver. And -- a purely personal statement -- that makes me sad. Dad hates liver.
