Perception has got a lot to do also. In 1996, the people perceived that they were going through good economic times. That the Internet economy was here to stay, the dot coms had a rosy future and the "old economy" of the steel mills etc. were on the way out. So I doubt if the right direction/wrong direction that you say are true since you quote FOX News.

Ohio is very shaky as far as Republican support. Many people will watch the debate, the first one, before they solidify whom they are going to vote for. Kerry slept in August while Bush labored. Now Bush is sleeping while he is being asked to come out and debate. His reluctance to accept the date in itself is showing how undecisive he is in dealing with people, let alone dealing with the tough nations of the world such as Germany, France and Russia. These are tough nations and Bush cannot handle toughness. For if he did he would have already had N. Korea and Iran under control. Right now the initiative on Iran lies in the hands of Europe and they have ignored Bush. The UK has already allied with France and Germany; not the US which I think is very significant.
