When we had this Persuasion discussion, I think about six months ago??, I went back and re-read it to see whether I had missed something. I didn't like it any more then than the last time I had read it, maybe 10 years ago.

Trollope is more than a political novelist. Yes, his Palliser series is wonderful, but I think his Barchester series is even better. And as to social commentary, nothing Dickens wrote is, I think of the lasting applicability of The Way We Live Now. That novel could have been written yesterday. It is amazingly precient even of our society.

Ulysses I agree. I think it's one of those things that the self-appointed elite pretend to understand/like in order to try to believe that they are of superior intellect. Like dissing mystery novels.
