it make sense for a company to attempt to gain market share in a weak market and reap the rewards once market recovers.
That strategy actually carry less of economic cost than the possible alternatives and considered "classic strategy" for breaking into the market.

While the effect on the current earnings is negative the effect on the company value maybe very positive.

AMD would have less of a chance in high demand because intel can simply threatened to cut off supply. In low demand that is not an issue and asps become a main consideration. Intel is an opposing side and whatever is good for amd is equally bad for intel.

At this point, IMHO, market share is everything for amd.
