As someone who values the scientific method for improving life processes over "faith" I've had the same arguments with people over decades. It usually breaks down into vitriol. Nobody changes their mind. religious people get captured by the right who don't argue with them because Big Oil and banks need those votes. Most "religious" people in our society accept science based medicine and technology for example rather than supernatural pathways. Even though they are sometimes too blind to see that. I can see why the founders chose church-state separation over a national religion or a national non-religion.
