$29.95 sounds like a pretty good price -- around here, I've seen "first three months for $29.95/mo." promotions, but I've never seen an ongoing rate that low.

I don't want to mislead anyone. The reason that my fixed monthly rate for broadband access is only $29.95 is because:

1. I purchased the cable modem outright for $99.00 to avoid the $5.00 per month modem "lease" charge (in my mind, somewhat akin to when Ma Bell used to charge customers a monthly fee to lease their telephones for 1 - 40+ years at a time!) I know.....the $99.00 price is ridiculous, but that's what it takes to eliminate the monthly $5.00 lease charge. It will take 20 months to break even but, after that, I'm home free.....and I'll own the modem!

2. I got an additional $5.00 per month discount because I already had a cable TV subscription (with the digital option) with the same outfit.

The next thing they are going to offer is local telephone service at a substantial discount to the rates currently charged by Southwesten Bell......I can't wait! Cable TV, high speed broadband internet access and telephone service all from the same provider and far less costly than if the services were provided separately.

By the way, the owner of the provider of all this service in my area is Paul Allen....the co-founder of Microsoft.
