for one fortune 500 companies always buy new stuff

the inventory overhang isn't about the top tier clients; it's about the effects at the margin. all the dotbomb shops going bankrupt reduces demand immediately. secondarily, their inventory, much of which is close to new, adds fresh supply to a glutted market. sure, they guys at goldman sachs may not buy it, but there is a marginal customer who might. that is a customer cisco might not get directly, that it otherwise would except for the surplus on the auction market. differences at the margins should not be ignored.
