I am not saying that SOI is a bad bet. I am saying that IF it is a bad bet, then it can be catastrophic for the company. IBM and AMD certainly know more about SOI than Intel and TI. On the other hand they have huge political and financial stakes in SOI. When reputations of researchers and managers are on the line, early signs of trouble can take a while to reach a critical mass and trigger fall-back planning. Kap
