Nishan Systems Opens SAN Core to IP Vendors
-- Nishan's native IP storage switches will be announced Monday (coincidence?)
--Enables networking vendors to compete in the SAN market
On Monday, Nishan Systems is announcing its Fibre Channel to Gigabit Ethernet switches that allow storage traffic to be transported over core IP networks. Nishan's announcement is among the first of severeal expected this year that will raise doubts about how impervious Fibre Channel switch vendors are to competition from the leading IP networking companies.
Nishan's strategy is interesting. It is not directly aiming at the Fibre Channel gorilla, Brocade, but instead is providing the means for companies such as Cisco, Juniper and Foundry to compete head to head with them. The key is that Nishan's technology takes SAN out of a specialized technology niche and plants it squarely in the path of Ethernet and IP.
Highlights of the announcement:
Two products: Gigabit Ethernet/Fibre Channel 8 port switch
Gigabit Ethernet/SCSI 6 port switch
Compatible with Fibre Channel Class 2 and 3 networks, including FC HBA vendors Emulex and Qlogic, and the broad range of Fibre Channel disk and tape systems. Also compatible with SCSI HBAs and storage systems.
Leverages legacy, industry standard parallel and serial SCSI technologies.
Compatible with Gigabit Ethernet core network switches including VLAN tagging.
Eliminates the need to manage a separate storage network. Management of the SAN becomes integrated with Enterprise IP network management systems.
Leverages IP technology across metropolitan and wide area links.
