Boeing satellite telephone bought from Motorola, is mostly on African continent. Motorola had 76 satellites. The equipment is fairly large and cumbersome, but can be used to connect microwave tower and cellphone connection locally with satellite central office in Illinois. GPS system has many more satellites, but very easy to be used for its own purpose of mapping distances, etc. Transmitters of GPS system does not have much antenna requirement. Great for telephone service someday. All satellites are passive. signals are bounced off the satellite between transmitters and ground stations.Many carrier frequencies and codecs can be used on these satellites. Automobile and hand held equipment with simple antennas are ideal. More on this later.
