As a long time Sun System Admin and programmer I would say Sun should be worried. You are correct NT doesn't scale as well as say Solaris does. But that's today, and besides most apps don't require scaling to the moon, i.e. the MS SQL only does 200GB argument instead of some other SQL servers that can do a terabyte.

The time will come when MSFT will raise the performance bar and more apps wiil fall within their domain. Just as most EE design tools are being ported so will the high end apps. I'm not saying it will replace all high end stuff, because that bar will also rise. Just like your expenses tend to grow with you pay raises.

The reasons I would recommend switching to NT, would be single desktop capable of doing all the high end stuff, plus Office and all the other MS apps.

For futher proof, just look what Sun has done to SGI's high end business, an Ultra does what most SGI graphics stations did a couple years ago. Some folks still need more power, but many can get by with new cheaper Ultra's. This same trend can happen to Sun by MSFT.

Since MSFT just dropped support for the MIPS processor and for good reasons, no market share, I'd like to see a port to Sparc/Ultra for those with a need for speed. That should stop the nonsense about CPU power, but it's almost like UNIX heresy. However, atleast the Utlra is a viable chip with a large and growing market share.
