Pfizer Probes Viagra-Linked Deaths; Nitrates Could Be Involved

New York, May 27 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc. said it's
investigating the deaths of six people who took its Viagra
impotence pill and won't rule out the possibility that some may
have improperly mixed Viagra with nitrates.

The New York-based drugmaker can't yet confirm that nitrates
may have played a role in some deaths, said Mariann Caprino, a
Pfizer spokeswoman. Nitrates are common drugs used to treat a
type of chest pain known as angina.

It is still unclear whether Viagra played a role in the
deaths. Pfizer estimates that 85 percent of the men who have been
given Viagra prescriptions are more than 50 years of age. Many
have diabetes and other medical conditions that contribute to
impotence, Pfizer said.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that Pfizer is
investigating the deaths. Pfizer earlier had declined to comment
on a U.S. Food and Drug Administration report of six deaths among
Viagra users.

On Thursday, Pfizer said it was sending letters to emergency
room personnel warning about the dangers of mixing Viagra with
nitroglycerin and other nitrates.

Pfizer fell 2 1/4 to 103 3/16 yesterday.
