I can easily see a scenario where we'd end up with both.

The argument would be we will have a sales tax that will affect the vast majority of Americans but keep a small remnant income tax that will affect only the very rich.

We need to be willing to compromise. You people who let the perfect be the enemy of this good need to grow up.

Then in 20 years we'd all be paying income tax again.
