Randy, How the new object-relational database will do in the market place will also depend heavily on how the rest of the world will accept the new technology. The new object-relational database by no mean spells the end of the relational database. I read in a recent InformationWeek article: the object relational database market will grow from 14M in 1995 to 1B in 2000 and the relational database market will continue to grow from 2.9B in 1995 to 8.1B in 2000. While object relational database commands a higher growth rate, relational database will continue to dominate the database market place in the intermediate future. Even if Oracle is behind in object-relational database, it still has plenty of time to catch up and at the same time enjoy the healthy growth from the relational database market.
Do not expect everyone dives into object-relational database and do not expect the same technology will take Informix pass Oracle. If Informix's Universal Server is indeed as good as it claims it will more likely to attract a small group of users and carve out a niche market for itself.
Expect the price to play a big part in the battle. Informix expects the users to pay a premium for its Universal Server, datablades will be difficult and expensive to maintain also. With Oracle's resources I fully expect Oracle will be able to undersell its database. If Informix cannot recover the cost of the Universal Server quickly and the earning continues to disappoint its stock will suffer and Informix will start to lose credibility, potential users will not just evaluate the technology from both companies, they will also try to see who will last longer.
We've seen many times before that superior technology does not mean everything, I do not think it will be any different this time around.
