I was a first generation hippie and mixed with some of the Merry Prankster folks. What the 60's was if you drilled down to its bedrock was the first existential movement in the history of mankind.

Let me explain. This is the thesis of the 60's movement:

Up until the 60's all of the people in the world, everywhere, and for all of history, HAD to live their lives exactly as their culture and family told them to e.g. a Muslim girl in Somalia had to live exactly as she was told, but so did everyone else on earth, more or less. If you were Hindu you married a Hindu and lived as a Hindu did, same with every other culture and religion on earth. Mormon, Catholic, Babtist and on and on.

The kids in the 60's had an awakening: No, they said: "I don't have to live as you say. I can do whatever I want. I have the god given right to manifest my own destiny as I see fit!"

That was the whole trip. Everything else was a sideshow. The awakening was just that the human species had finally evolved intellectually to see that concept.

That is the story so few understand.
