Here is this ridiculous cable analogy, per Bob Pitchman, rearing its ugly head again. Maybe I am missing something, but I do not remember anyone granting AOL a monopoly as were cable companies. Secondly, it is not clear that advertising will ever work on the net, whereas the TV model certainly proved that advertising would work for cable.
AOL is a channel on the net, something along the lines of the Lifetime channel.
