SI Dev is back in business.
It was running on a single machine that was both webserver and db server. That machine was changed to just a db server and a webserver was added in front of it, both boxes also becoming Windows 2003 Server boxes.
It took several retries on the operating system install before we could get the db server to recognize more than 60 gig of its 170-gig array, but that was finally fixed by moving to Windoze 2003 *and* skipping Dell's "required" setup disk.
Then we had a problem evade solution for a really long time. Specifically that the webserver would run html and asp, but wouldn't run aspx and would instead throw a useless error advising the administrator to check for the entry it made in the event log. An entry it wasn't making.
Some days I just wanna kiss Bill Gates. <groan>
Dave fixed that problem last night. We're not even sure if *he* knows how he fixed it. But it works, so I'm not asking questions.
I'm good at programming and databases, but when it comes to anything else having to do with computers (including operating systems, services, networking, and that kind of stuff), I feel as dumb about it as most people do about programming.
Anyway, it's working again and my next task (which may also be a rather high hurdle) is getting the incremental message imports working again. It took forever to get the Oracle client working right on that machine before, and now I'm dealing with a slightly, but significantly, different network setup.
Edit: Until I've gotten the incremental imports running again, this means you can post at will on Dev and the messages won't be erased for a while, and it also means that the "Hot Stock Boards" both here and on Dev won't be functional for a while, since Dev builds that list based on the last 3 days' of activity that it knows about. And it won't know anything until the next incremental import. |
