I am one who understands and has experienced it first hand abroad. I once was sitting next to British ex pat who said something off color re the host country. To which I said to him ya might want to refrain making those statements whether on a phone or not. You never know who is monitoring. He ignored me and continued. Not too long after in came in a few soldiers carrying guns and taking him away. Where he was then put in jail.. to then be flogged and then deported.. HMM... And they said it will never happen here.
