| Mystery Road: Origin S02
I’ve really enjoyed following the on-screen exploits of Aboriginal detective Jay Swann, from his original incarnation in the theatrical feature Mystery Road from 2013 and the two seasons of the TV show Mystery Road from 2018 and 2020. , and continuing through first season of the prequel Mystery Road: Origin from 2022. Hence I was glad when I came across the just-released second season of Mystery Road Origin, and my anticipation was rewarded.

The prequel is set several decades ago in frontier style towns in the outback where racism directed at Aboriginal people was just an expected part of life, so young Jay Swann at times has to channel Jackie Robinson just to do his job. You would have thought she would have learned from the first season when Swann returned to his remote hometown for his first job as a detective, causing all sorts of problems for himself and others in order to solve crimes, but his very pregnant girlfriend has decided she wants to have the child in her remote hometown, you guessed it, causing all sorts of problems, especially when Jay arrives. In fact, he is still miles outside of town on his way to join her when a truck crashes out of a side road and things kick off.

This an extremely well made series which has won many awards, highlighted by excellent acting and direction, and a great script, and I wanted to make special mention of the music and sound design. As well, all the characters are deliciously complex mixtures of good and bad, which the actors really dig into.

So I am going to recommend it highly, with one proviso. The six episodes are extremely intense, so I would not recommend watching more than one episode in a row except for maybe the last two.
