They would show samples of plastic lumber and product brochures for eligible lumber SKUs [at IWF]. An entry in a distributor's catalog just doesn't work if you're trying to show your customer why your product is premium. They want to pick it up, touch it, ask you questions about it. Trade shows are also the place to get contacts and build working relationships (might be good to visit the BlueLinx folk in person sometimes).

Attending these types of conventions is just so fundamental for doing business in a supply chain. When I went to Sustainable Dallas last November, one small straw board vendor had set up his booth after just tearing it down from another convention in Atlanta a couple of days before. I doubt he really did any business in Dallas that day, but the region is a 6 million population metroplex. Any homebuilders wanting to use sustainable building materials there would have had a chance to inspect the product and decide if it was suitable for their sites.

So many builders believe that nothing recycled can match up to the quality of virgin materials. Once they've seen the product up close, quite often it's an epiphany.
