Analog Devices to unveil one-chip modem
By Carmen Nobel, PC Week Online

ÿAnalog Devices Inc. will introduce at the end of this month a single-chip 56K-bps modem for Internet service providers, according to sources close to the company.

Although several larger firms have single-chip modems on the market, this one is expected to be special, according to industry experts.

"It is a 56K modem and more," said one analyst who requested anonymity. "It will have features beyond simple analog modem functionality. [Analog Devices] has some secret herbs and spices the others have not come out with yet. They'll be packing more into a smaller space than anyone else."

Fewer chips should mean a smaller price tag for customers, and officials said Analog Devices aims to have a cost advantage over its competitors.

The new modem is slated to be released on Sept. 29.
