An Interstate Highway System for Energy

Andy Stone 10.30.08, 6:00 PM ET

Forbes Magazine dated November 24, 2008

Now there's another reason to build transmission lines: The U.S. wants to change its fuel mix. Coal will wane (at least as a percent of the total), while wind, solar and nuclear get more attention. The reason you need more lines is that the new power plants aren't going to be where the old ones were. They may be 500 miles away ( read "Oil, Gas and Wires" by Peter Huber).

"If you truly believe we need to expand the renewable portfolio, then you absolutely need this system to deliver the energy," says Michael G. Morris, 62, AEP's chief executive. "Equally important, if you have a coal plant in West Virginia that has a very efficient generation rate and therefore has an economic advantage over a plant in eastern Pennsylvania, then why not let West Virginia compete for the Philadelphia market? You just need transmission."
