That's right, you only see who are the most active market makers in a stock, not whether they were buying or selling.

My understanding is that market makers themselves do not hold long term positions in the stocks. They would only hold small inventories or short positions overnight.

However, many of these market makers are also subsidiaries of large brokerages that may themselves hold positions either directly or indirectly in mutual funds or pension funds that they manage.
