2 Press releases 1st:IBM launches $699 server to compete with Dell
August 30, 2001 4:06:00 PM ET

NEW YORK, Aug 30 (Reuters) - International Business Machines (IBM) on Thursday launched a $699 computer server based on an Intel Corp. (INTC) microchip, bringing its lowest price down to near the same level as Dell Computer Corp. (DELL).

The IBM server, called the eServer x200VL, is based on Intel's Celeron microprocessor that runs at 850 megahertz, or 850 million cycles per second. The unit also has 20 gigabytes of disk-drive storage, about the same amount found in an average PC sold today.

Previously, the lowest price point for an entry-level server from IBM was $759.

On July 27, Dell launched its PowerEdge 500SC at $699, its then lowest price point. That machine runs on an 800 megahertz Celeron and has 10 gigabytes of disk drive storage.

Since the launch, the company has cut the price to $649 and increased the drive to 20 gigabytes, said Dell spokeswoman Sara Lavendar. REUTERS
