"A chicken" is normally used to refer to a specific, if broad, phase of chicken development, not to the whole life cycle of the chicken. A human being refers to the whole human life cycle.

In any case as I said to Lane, dictionary definitions really aren't' important to almost anyone on either side, except perhaps as a rhetorical device to make an argument against the other side of the issue.
