jim, i have aol as one of three isp's. i've experienced hanging, or freezing when trying to close a browser window by clicking on the upper right "X". as a very effective work-around, you can try minimizing the browser window, then clicking on the X to close.

whether any of the above has anything to do with your modem, i know not. but it caught my eye when you mentioned aol and hanging. btw, imo there is a huge contingent of aol techs out there (not all mind you, but many) who will have you installing and uninstalling until you are blue in the face. i listened to them once. then i figured out the real problem. :)
