Extreme weather:
Torrential rains in South Dakota and Spain
The Big Sioux River has reached record-breaking levels Thursday as heavy rainfall pummeled and flooded much of southeastern South Dakota.

The Big Sioux River above Dell Rapids surpassed March's record-breaking flooding of 1,489.5 feet. The river was last recorded at 6 p.m. on Thursday at 1,489.29 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Flood stage is 1,481 feet.

The Big Sioux River has also reached record flooding at the Big Sioux River near Egan and Split Rock Creek below Jasper.

Much of southeastern South Dakota is dealing with flooded roads, delayed school starts and working ferociously at sandbag stations. All of Lake County is currently under a no-travel advisory, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

I-90 is closed between Plankinton and Sioux Falls until floodwaters recede.
