ep,
is one of the few consistent differences between the US and Canada. Actually there are more than the surface would belie and don't forget everything can swing too far.

I would recommend that book again by Canadian polster Michael Adams , Fire and Ice.. Bear in mind he has a liberal bent and displays some Canucky smugness wrt to Americans... but the results put forth from 20 years of polling in the US and Canada are truly interesting... although some of his commentary can be discarded.. amazon.com

Then again with two young kids, my concerns for the future are biased..

"Life isn't fair..." John F. Kennedy I tell my kids that regularly... no joke.. along with a whole bandwagon of sayings along the theme of being independent... the path I've set them on ... however the line between the public good and personal freedom is not so clear cut... neither are easy to manage... but properly used the public good can be a powerful insurance against disaster... Just being pragmatic here... I'm not a bleeding heart liberal.. just ask Malcolm :o)
