Having spent a lot of time growing up in San Diego,

I love the city and the climate. However, if TG thinks FL has an extortion tax, he would not like CA. Do what Bush did. Have your residence in a very nice tax state (i.e., close to MG), and spend your time wherever you want. Takes a little effort, but worth it in many cases.

Of course, JT has taken this concept to a much higher level. I remember an individual from Korea asking me whether he should set up his corporation in the U.S. or Panama. I responded that I was still trying to decide whether I should set it up in DE or VA.
