Just posted a similar message on Voltaire's board. Would appreciate any help/clarification. Is there a difference between "writing a covered call" and "selling a call." From what I have read in McMillan they are the same transaction yet I seem to recall having read a message once (on this board or the Porch) that they are not the same transaction. Hence I'm confused. We have two accounts with two different brokers: one (DLJ) has a trading screen that says:

buy calls/puts
close calls/puts
covered calls

The other broker (Siebert) says: (I'm listing only the pertinent categories)

buy calls to open
buy calls to close
sell calls to open
sell calls to close

Would 'selling a call to open' be the same as 'writing a covered call?'

I've read McMillan but I'm not clear.

Appreciate any help.
