Michael Powell Appointed Chairman Of Federal Communications Commission.(Brief Article)
Jet, Feb 12, 2001

Michael K. Powell, a member of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), was recently appointed by President Bush to serve as chairman of the commission.

Powell, 37, son of Secretary of State Colin Powell, had been an FCC commissioner since 1997. Powell, a Republican, replaces William Kennard, a Democrat and the agency's first Black chairman, who recently resigned.

Powell's appointment does not require Senate confirmation.

"I am deeply honored and privileged to have received President Bush's designation to be chairman of the Federal Communications Commission," Powell said in a press statement. "I look forward to working with the new administration, Congress, my fellow commissioners and the very talented FCC staff on the important and challenging communications issues facing our nation."

He started a military career which was cut short when he was injured in a training accident while on duty. After he spent a year in the hospital, he retired from the service.

He graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in government in 1985. He went on to earn his law degree at Georgetown University and became a telecommunications lawyer.

Prior to coming to the FCC, he served as the chief of staff of the Antitrust Division in the Department of Justice.

He and his wife, Jane Knott Powell, have two children, Jeffrey and Bryan.
