The Checkered Past and Promising Future of Antibody Therapeutics
C. Geoff Davis, Ph.D. Senior Vice President, Research Abgenix
Abstract:
While antibodies have always been with us, the technology allowing us to isolate and produce antibodies with discreet specificities suitable for therapeutics was only developed as recently as the mid 1970s. From that time, another 20 years would pass before monoclonal antibodies would establish themselves as bona fide drugs. Today, there are 17 monoclonal antibodies approved and on the market, with over 150 more in clinical trials. This presentation will reexamine the technological breakthroughs that have elevated monoclonal antibodies to the forefront of biologics for treating a wide spectrum of human diseases.
