WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States has offered help to Spain in its investigation of the deadly March 11 bomb blasts in Madrid, an FBI (news - web sites) official said.

"The US government, through the president's office and through the Secretary of State has made the offer to assist in the investigation," the official said privately.

"But this is not something we can do without an invitation by Spain. The Spanish are handling the investigation and we haven't been invited," the official added.

The attacks left 201 people dead and more than 1,500 others injured after 10 bombs exploded almost simultaneously in four commuter trains.

In the past FBI investigators have taken part in investigations of attacks committed abroad and not necessarily on US targets.

They also took part in the probe of the October 12, 2002 attack in Bali, that killed 202 people.

If the FBI hadn't been wasting the last year and a half on Iraq maybe they'd be a little further ahead on Al Qaeda. Maybe a lot more Spaniards might be a live, and maybe the Socialists wouldn't be in power...
