boris_a, "In my youth, we never locked up house or bicycle, even living close to the city. ..Is it better in the US? "

I don't know about other places, but I frequently forget
to lock doors in my house. In fact, it does not add
any safety since the strength of typical home construction
here is barely enough to stop a physically-fit men to
get through a window or even a wall <G>.

Speaking about bicycles, if you leave it in downtown or at
University campus, it probably will be stolen soon.
However, in my community, I had an anecdotical
case. One morning, a fellow stopped by with a bicycle,
and asked if I want the bicycle back. I looked around
my five bicycles hanging in garage, and said "huh????".
It turned out that sometime ago his bicycle was stolen,
so he has to "borrow" another bicycle form someone in
this community. Now he wants to return it, but forgot
where he took it...

So, everything is ok with social progress in the US :)
Take care,

- Ali
