DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Twenty seven convicted criminal aliens were arrested in North Texas during a four day sweep by local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Each of the arrestees has been convicted of crimes including: driving while intoxicated, assault with bodily injury on a family member, purchasing/furnishing alcohol to a minor, engaging in organized criminal activity, alien smuggling and theft. Two were arrested for felony or aggravated felony crimes.

Almost all of those arrested, twenty-five men and one woman, are being held in custody as they wait to appear before a federal immigration judge or removal from the country. One woman was released following her arrest when it was determined she was the only caregiver for a small child. All of those arrested are from Mexico.

“Our dedicated ICE officers play a significant role in helping make our communities safer by arresting convicted criminal aliens and removing them from the United States,” said Simona L. Flores, field officer director for ERO Dallas. “By focusing our resources on the most egregious offenders, we ensure the very best use of our resources, while immediately improving public safety.”

Twenty six of those arrested were taken into custody in Corsicana. One was arrested in Dallas.

Last year, ICE removed more than 300,000 illegal aliens and 85% of them had previous criminal convictions. More than 15,000 illegal aliens were removed last year. Nearly 13,000 of them had criminal convictions.
