Is music studio use of removable recording media really a big deal for any media provider? Isn't it the masses of consumers that will affect sales and the bottom line rather than a few recording studios?

My knowledge of the impact of the music industry's impact on potential disk sales is nil and I would appreciate posts on this subject since it has been touted frequently.
