The IBM PC became popular because of its open architecture. If you ever go to a computer fair in a big city, you will see all kinds of systems, parts and upgrades made by many many companies, small and large.

The following is no lie. I went to a computer fair in Pittsburgh, PA about a month ago and on a sign at the door were the words "No MACs". Thre reason of course is misguided greed. APPL thinks that by keeping all this to itself by legally protecting its design, that they will have all the business. OF course this is folly. People will go where they get the best value, in this case PC clones.

If APPL opened its architecture to the market (without these very high license fees), you would see Taiwanese and small companies and entrepreneurs everywhere makign clones and stuff for APPLs and this is what makes them popular. It may be too late for this now, and commodity computers are a direction that APPL is moving away from, so this will never happen.

It will be interesting to see where APPL goes. I think it will end up being a very small player in niche markets, or else acquired and absorbed by SUN or someone else.

Too bad. APPL owners tend to be very loyal to their quirky machines.

Personally I use an APPL at work for hours every day and a PC clone at home. We use Microsoft software on both (Word, Windows, etc.) and to me, I can barely tell the difference. I think the "ease of use" of APPL has been largely overrated.
