Calgary, Canada, Jul 15, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) -- A tornado tore through a campground in the Canadian Rockies, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 70, officials said Saturday.
The tornado touched down Friday at the Green Acres campground, in Red Deer County 150 kilometers (90 miles) north of Calgary, tossing people, trailers and vehicles around like matchsticks, witnesses said.
Many of the injured had to be airlifted to hospitals by helicopter. At least seven people were known to have died, but authorities said more bodies may be in a lake alongside the campground.
Summer is hurrican season in the region. In 1987, a storm killed 27 people and injured another 300 in Canada. EFE
